Session Outline
Sleep Related Breathing Disorders are a common finding within the general population.
Unfortunately, these disorders are routinely under diagnosed despite their potential morbidity and
mortality. Dental providers, being part of the health care team, are in a unique position to alter
this narrative by screening for these disorders and potentially manage some of these conditions
with a focus on obstructive sleep apnea and snoring. This is supported by the increase in
knowledge regarding this topic due to an explosion of evidence-based information. In light of
this advancement in scientific discovery, this presentation will provide an overview of the sleep
process and the role of the Dental provider in addressing adults experiencing sleep related
breathing disorders.
The term and condition known as Bruxism has been studied for many years. However, over the
past number of years there has been an explosion of interest and publications regarding this topic
resulting in a paradigm shift in the understanding of this phenomenon. This evolutionary
advancement was made possible due to the growth of scientific knowledge and implementation
of novel technological assessment. This presentation provides an evidence-based analytical
approach as to what the current literature reports regarding this most interesting human behavior.

Objectives
1. Gain an appreciation and understanding of basic sleep physiology.
2. Recognition and understanding of screening for and managing various Sleep Related
Breathing Disorders focusing on obstructive apnea and snoring in adults.
3. Appreciate and understand differences between awake and sleep bruxism.
4, Enhancement of knowledge following an evidence-based approach regarding bruxism as a
human behavior.
